Welcome to York County Solidarity, we're so glad you're here.
YCS is a community-driven, progressive group with a few simple goals:
1) Mutual Aid and Education: Anyone in the group can request mutual aid (including for non-members or the community as a whole). Similarly, anyone in the group is empowered to help where they can. Nothing else matters if we can't keep ourselves provided for and safe.
2) Community Betterment Projects: Any member of the group can organize or request assistance for any project that meets our very basic tenants (below). This could be food drives, one-shot volunteering projects, community events, or anything else you can think of! You don't need to wait for someone else- every member of the group can take responsibility and drive a project!
3) Political Action: We will continue to try to take part in national protests as we've done in the past, but we're also really focusing on local-level politics as well to make immediate changes in our communities. This includes pushing local community councils to make changes, being involved in local elections, and taking part in voter education.
Our tenets drive our actions- these are our core philosophies that define our goals.
1) Build a better community. All of our work starts at home- make York County a better place for everyone. Everything we do should be an answer to the question "how can I make my community stronger and healthier?"
2) Everyone deserves safety and happiness. We all deserve liberty, freedom, healthcare, and basic needs like food and shelter. Thus, our focus should be around supporting marginalized and struggling communities- immigrants, people of color, the LGBTQ+ community, the unhomed/those struggling with poverty, etc.
3) Be involved. We each have our own ways to contribute and capabilities and means, but please try to be involved. Everyone has something to offer- time, knowledge, skills, money, etc. so please take interest in people's initiatives, take the time to share in your communities, and contribute however you can.
That's it- simple enough. As much as we want to enact national or even global change, change always starts at home. It starts with you, then your family and friends, your neighbors, your community- and up from there. We have to show people a better way, not tell them.
